I went to school for four years in Durham and have worked in Chapel Hill, RTP and now Durham so I know the area almost as well as the underside of my Saab. I think it really depends on your son's priorities, but with an IBM starting salary he could live comfortably pretty much anywhere in the area, IMHO.
The RTP area is very much commuter based, almost anywhere he lives he will be driving to work. RTP itself and many of the immediate surrounds are dominated by generic though nice apartment complexes and housing developments that are priced suitably for a young professional. However, I would strongly recommend at least checking out Chapel Hill. It's a very fun city, and living within waling distance of all the dining options and bars is an enormous quality of life advantage, in my opinion, as well as a great way to meet new people (the town is crawling with grad students and young professionals, as well as the college kids). I don't find the costs to be outragous by any means (especially if he is willing to live with a roomate), though I might not want to pay the premium for a house in Chapel Hill if I was buying.
Durham is another option, which has some charm and lower rent but a higher crime rate in certain areas, and a lot of folks enjoy Raleigh, though I have very little experience with that corner of the triangle. My personal (biased) advice is the pay a bit of a premium for the quality of life bonus that come with not living in a generic aprtment complex surrounded by other. Your son needs to have fun and enjoy is first job too!
Feel free to post or shoot me an email, I'd be happy to help out if I can.
