If the interference is recent the first thing to ask yourself is did you recently add ANY new equipment in your house that uses electricity? Some appliances, for example have horrible characteristics of throwing electrical interference on the power lines. Even if you have no new equipment sometimes equipment can go bad and cause the problems.
The most simple thing to do is start unplugging appliances and anything electrical one item at a time. If unplugging something clears up the interference then you have your culprit. There are filtered outlets you can buy to plug into your outlet, then plug your offending device into.
Alternately, you can buy toroid chokes at any Radio Shack. These are magnetic devices and you can tightly wrap the antenna feed line (coax or other type) as close to your receiver as possible. Without boring you with the technical details, these can filter out much common interference for low cost (about $5 or $6 I believe). Of course, it could be something at your neighbor's house, too like the other person said. This is expensive but you can have whole-house electrical filters installed.
It is also a little known fact that all (or at least most) electric utilities have free interference diagnosing services. They use them all the time on their own power grid and can usually be dispatched for residential problems as well. These typically consist of a guy in a van with some serious electronics inside and direction finding antennas to locate interference sources. It is conceivable that a local transformer that feeds your house could have gone bad, too.
If you can't find any offending appliances or electronics then try to track if the interference occurs during the same time every day or if it corresponds to certain events. As a kid my parents had problems with wavy TV signals every time a plane flew over...I believe it was probably the transponder on the plane (device that is interrogated by ground based radar). Unfortunately many consumer electronics such as TVs have very poor 'front ends' meaning they don't reject interference very well.
Hope this helps....Brian the Ham Radio Geek, Saab lover and pilot!
