Knowledgeable lubrication engineers and amateurs alike claim otherwise, but there is still an issue with long-time dino-oil using cars beign switched to synthetic. I have seen it with my own eyes on Ms. Jessica's C900T. 3000 leak-free miles on Castrol GTX, and 183,000 miles on the clock, then changed to a 5W40 synthetic and instant puddles. I've switched cars with lower mileage and known good maintenance with no such problems. But to be forwarned...
Is the Vanagon water cooled or air cooled? Air cooled would be a powerful incentive to switch to synthetic.
"high mileage" conventional oil has the advantage (for Valvoline, at least) of *not* being an ILSAC GF grade, and therefore is not limited in the amount of zinc dithiophosphate anti-wear additives. This advantage will fade away with the next API grade, SM, where you will need to purchase a *non-ILSAC* viscosity grade (XW40 or XW50) to avoid the limits on phosphorous.
Bottom line - you are asking a question which no one can answer for sure without experimenting on several otherwise identical copies of your VW. Good luck. If what you're doing is working, why change it?
