I went the wireless route with Ms. Jessica's HP laptop - her room at law school is within the campus "wireless cloud." in that case, there was no issue with the card being recognized and the software coming up ... but there was a big problem with reception. Card was good - received well in other peoples' computers, but something in the HP interfers with the signal. We have had MUCH better luck with a USB wireless adapter - it came with a long wire and the "business end" is far enough from the case that reception isn't an issue.

Also, I would try and get your mom's operating system upgraded to at least W98 second edition, if not W2K or XP. All of the above are more solid than W95, which could be half (or more) of your problem.
