If they are large (usually 1/2 inch or bigger) they may be carpenter ants. They aren't necessarily chowing down on your house, but then again they might be. Look around the foundation (the sill where wood meets cement) for any soft wood. If you have wet soft wood you are headed for trouble.
Assuming they are just regular black ants, in order of expense and environmental considerations....
You can put out ant traps, which contain a poison the ants take back to their nest and which kills the colony and the queen. I've found the Combat brand works well. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times.
Also call your state university extension service. They may have some advice that will be based on where you live (important).
The other resort is obviously to call an exterminator, but since you have a rug rat this may not be cool, as exterminators use some pretty nasty stuff. Worth a call anyway to see what they say.
We have a service spray around our foundation 2X a year which has made a difference in the ant population. Still get some, but no biggie.
