Subaru has done a fine job making people think (long)

they have upscale cars. Don't get me wrong, I like Subys and if Saabs vanished from the planet tomorrow I'd probably get a Suby, but they are not, IMHO in the same league.
Suby's are Japanese-level reliable, which is a big selling point, and have developed an almost cult-car following. But a lot of their more recent success is pure marketing hype/BS, which is largely capitalizing on the perception that AWD makes for a safer car, along with catering to the needs of those who are SUV-owner wannabes but who don't want the size and really bad mileage.
But when I looked at Outback Wagons last year and saw the prices the first thing I thought, was "Geez I can buy a new Saab for what they want for a Suby." And for what I paid for my used 9K I wouldn't have gotten nearly as nice a used Subaru.
AWD is nice, although overrated, IMHO. And I couldn't help but notice that the Forester Turbo is rated at 19 city, 23 highway. That's barely any better than my wife's Explorer, and the Forester does on the highway what my 9K does around town.
But as I said, it's all some really fine image and lifestyle marketing. The outdoorsy image, the alliance with LL Bean, the sponsorship of Lance Armstrong, etc., all work to give them the different image that is clearly successful.
Saab's marketing guys and ad agency should take notes.
