I am a young Saab owner who is willing to trade some time and effort for the pleasure of owning a great car (9000 Aero) over a similarly priced car which is easy to find parts and mechanics for. (Saab parts are getting easier and easier to find thanks to places like TSN and Eeuroparts, etc.)
I do 90% of the work on my car, and I'm the one buying the car that's been around the block a few times...and therefore, hopefully, depreciated just about all it can. I also buy with cash...no financing for me, at least not yet.
Examples, you ask?
'85 BMW 325e, purchased for $4K in '96. Insurance paid $4793.57 after it was totaled in '99 (I put a lot of effort into cleaning it up.)
'89 BMW 325iS, Purchased for $5000 in '99 w/ insurance money, sold for $4000 in '03 w/ 191,000 miles.
'93 Saab 9000 Aero (44K), purchased last fall for $7400. I think it'll be worth $7400 for a while now (Granted, I got a great deal on a low-miles car, there have been similar cars here on the Saabnet for over $10K)
I think that there is a lot to be said for the ease having a new car (warranty, nice, un-molested, reliable (you hope anyway)etc.) And a CPO lease return is also a great option.
I must say that I don't think a six-year old car will return only $3K on trade-in. (Dealer trade-in values have always been a joke to me anyway). How many six year-old Saabs are being sold for $3K? (I guess I come from the school of thought that trading in a used car is like accepting 25% less than it's worth in a convenience charge for dropping off the keys and driving away in a shiny new one.)
My two cents. I'll be out there looking at new cars someday, but only when I can afford them...not just the payments.
Cheers!
~Peter
