The science is that the wear metals are too small for a full flow filter to remove. These keep building up. These metal particles act as catalysts that polymerize the oil. These are removed when you drain the oil. If the engine blows a lot of oil, you are replacing the oil slowly. If not, things just go bad until you get oil starvation. Meanwhile, the metal particles do themselves cause more wear in an increasing fashion.
