To me, a Trangia is the Saab of the backpacking/camping world. For a start, they're both made in Sweden. Second, they are both brilliantly designed. Finally, they are both hugely underappreciated outside of a hard-core of well-informed fanatics.
For those unfamiliar with a Trangia cooking system, it consists of an alcohol burner and a nested set of pots that packs down to a pretty small package. It requires no maintenance whatsoever (no unblocking pesky burner holes) and takes a lot of abuse (I've had my set for at least 15 years now). The fuel is a lot less dangerous than most others (and when I was in the Caribbean I used 160 proof rum as the fuel since it was cheaper than denatured alcohol!).
Yes it is kind of slow to boil a quart of water - but I'm always on vacation when I'm using it so what's the hurry. Besides the built in wind shield does speed things up significantly (relatively) compared with a jet fuel type stand alone burner.
I think these are a lot more popular in Europe (where I got mine) - I don't see many in the US - there is one in my local outdoor shop that's gathering dust and I'm just waiting for them to sell it off at a deep discount.
