Our other car is an Audi A4 Quattro V6 5-speed, which weighs about 3400 lbs. I believe that this car and the BMW 530 are similar in weight, and may have similar OEM manufacturers for the brake parts. Being a 5-speed, mine is probably a little easier on brakes than an automatic (not fighting the engine when stopping). The car is used primarily for suburban driving, lots of stop-and-go.

At about 60,000 miles I had to replace all four pads and four rotors. I actually measured the rotors and they were right at their wear limit, although new is only a slight bit more. A mechanic friend says that the front pads were probably replaced at about 30,000 miles while the car was in for some other issue - I brought it in for warranty repair for noisy brakes around that time, but pads were not on the invoice. He also said that a typical cycle for current German cars is: 30,000 miles for front pads; 60,000 for rear pads; 60,000 for all rotors. Yes, the rotors now seem to be wear items due to allegedly hard brake pads - which I find hard to believe considering how much black dust they generate!

It's possible that your friend's car does need the new brake parts, or it may be some 10,000 miles off and the mechanic is generating some premature work. You may want to seek a second opinion.
