of attributing the effect to gasoline differences I would suspect the differences in pump calibrations and the temperature of the gasoline at fill-up time.
Sometimes I think some gas stations advertise low gas prices but you may not get a full gallon so your mileage would go down. Then you may fill up at a different gas station where they actually give you a true gallon and your mileage goes up accordingly.
