I work for an ambulance manufacturer. We recently installed a wireless tire pressure monitoring system in one of our factory demonstrators. It is designed for the trucking industry. I hate it!
This system (sorry I don't remember the brand) uses tiny golf ball looking sensors that screw on to the valve stems. You put the system into programming mode and it senses the initial set point (pressure) read by each sensor and writes it to memory. If a sensor drops 12.5% below set point you get an audible alarm that is cancellable, as well as a flashing LED on a pictogram of a truck to indicate which tire is low. If a tire falls 25% below initial set point you get an audible alarm that you cannot cancel. If you have a defective sensor, which we appear to, the friggin' alarm goes off all of the time causing the driver (me) to unplug the system.
This system is wireless. It's a nice concept but is not user friendly in any way. The manufacturer also makes the sensors with a non-replaceable battery, meaning every time the battery dies you are ordering a new sensor from them. I don't know what the sensors cost but the entire system I believe to be around $450. I hope this helps. When I get back to the office tomorrow morning I'll get the brand name from this system and post it here.
