I tried a hatch mount rack. It worked, but I never felt comfortable with my Trek 7000 on there. Too loose and shaky. I was also worried about damage to my paint from the hooks. I just got the Saab load bars for my 97 900 SET. They work great. Easy installation and they do not touch your roof at all (they snap into holes under the weatherstripping). I had a full Thule set up on my 91 SPG. The fairing definitely left a visible line when the rack was removed.
Here is what you need:
1. Saab load bars. I believe they are actually made by Thule. Buy for Taliaferro for around $100.
2. Bike tray or trays. I bought 2 velo-vice mounts. These are the most sturdy imo. $95/ea.
3. Lockset. 2 locks are $20.
4. Wheel mounts. $15-20/ea. With the velo-vice you need to remove your front wheel. If you are going somewhere local this is no big deal. If you are going on a trip, it sure saves space putting the wheels on the rack instead of in the trunk.
I took a 1200 mile round trip with two bikes on the top of my 91. No problems.
Have fun!
