1st - Many thanks to so many of you that have posted instuctions. I found myself going back far enough to follow Dean's travels, and help!
1999 9-5SE 2.3LPT High End HK
-Snapped off the center connector on both left and right grills! I was being very careful on the right side, to not repeat the left sides 'snap'!
-I left the cap's alone for now, to see how the stock Kappa's sound.
-Completed install in two hours, with an obligatory trek to Home Depot for washers. (45 Mins)
-Both grills are slightly distorted, enough that I will notice the lack of fit & finish. The broken connector seems to be a factor, so I will price replacements from the dealer.
-Sound? Mid range sounds great out of the box. The high end seems very bright (more so in the 9-5, then the 9-3). I will wait for about 75-100 hrs of usage, before becoming too alarmed.
2004 9-3SS Linear (Thk's Mike Lynch!)- Base sound system.
-Grills were a 'snap' to remove.
-45 mins to install both.
-Grills were a 'snap' to install, and look good.
-Sound? Again, great mid range - and the high end seems less bright in the 9-3, Smitty likes:).
I do need to wait for both of these to burn in, but being an old Boston speaker fan (From the old Rally's up through the Pro Components - in our other cars/trucks). I'm thinking that I will go spend the money for the FX3's, as they may be a better match for 9-5's system. I've always found them to be warmer and well balanced to my ear. I know the FX3's do not carry the same spec's as the Kappa's - but I suspect they will be equally great in the mid range, and less bright (Kappa's almost sound tingy so far, with treble down just a notch from mid center). I have a good relation with the local Tweeter and Good Guy's, so they should let me try them out to see if I like them.
Question to those whom have traveled before me. Does swapping out the cap's help tame the high end's too bright (for now) sound?
Kappa's were from etronics.com - for $59 a pair. Not the best price on the net, but I usually pay a few $$ more to go with E companies that have a good track record.
I'll update in a few months, after testing the Boston's and letting the Kappa's ease into my listening zone...
Note: My wife says that it is my choice of music - she says my choices are not too bright!! Give me a chance, I'm at least listening to U2 and the Pretender's now - I can handle the new stuff, minus 10 years!! :)
(This from a person who drives around with a pumpkin or something like that smashing around on the inside of her ear drums...)
Again - Thanks to all for the many, many great posts! Keep on Saabing,
9-3/9-5 Smitty
