I've decided it's not worth the hassle. I'm about to move to a new loft so preparing for that is a higher priority than jacking up the car and digging the old GM steering rack donut out of storage. Sadly I'm likely to trade for a different marque as the build quality of my Viggen (at 41K the car sounds like it is about to rattle itself apart) has left a lot to be desired. Keeping the car out of warranty entails financial risks I don't particularly care for and the almost 50% depreciation (based on trade-in value) in 2.5 years has left me a bit disappointed and wary of putting money down on another SAAB. The only route I'll likely consider at this point is a 2002 CPO 9-5 Arc or Aero so that I have a longer warranty and miss some of the depreciation.
I'm not busting on SAAB. I really loved the Viggen until the aging chassis began to show through as the car aged poorly. My '98 900SET was also a fantastic car, but at the very least this time when considering my next purchase, if new, in addition to considering a 9-3SS Arc I will also test drive a G35, an Acura TL, and may even test drive a 330i though I can't really see myself spending that much money for such a small car in which my 6'+ friends can't comfortably ride in the back seat. By my calculations the BMW of my desired configuration would easily bust the $42K barrier and probably reach about $44K when the deal was done. I could afford it but it goes against my instincts to pay that much for a car.
