Drove for 7 days, a very acceptable Vauhxall. Steady, seats kind of hard but overall ok.
Anyway, I filled up when half way empty. Car wouldn't start next time I stopped for an hour. I PUT UNLEADED IN A DIESEL CAR!!!!
No warning when I rented it; a little sticker on the gas cap that was frayed at the edge, and no resistance from putting the hose in. Of course, afterward I noticed the TDI label and figured out why the car was so quiet.
AHH!! Avis charged me 750 dollars!!!
Traded out for a Mercedes 220. Drove ok. Parked in Glasgow downtown where you pay for parking and get these little papers to put on your dash. Well, it was raining hard and I was trying to rush. Came out next morning and had a 120 dollar ticket!!! The paper must have turned over from sticking to my finger and the traffic cop couldn't see when I had payed!!
Turned the car in a few hours later to Avis and they claim that I damaged the bumper. I didn't come close to anyone, parked on a corner away from traffic. Another 200 dollars!!
One thousand dollars just for the car.
Not to mention the exchange rate crashing while I was there. 30 dollar breakfasts. Not a single meal for under 20 dollars, even just pizza.
Stayed at the Arthouse hotel downtown Glasgow. Was a sauna--halogen lights, dark purple rooms. No A/C. Only could open the window a crack, and a wedding party was blaring RAP music to 2 AM. I have never been that hot in Houston in the summer.
But--the castles were spectacular and I played golf twice along the eastern coast that was AMAZING.
But man am I broke. Have to give up my premium cable, parking spot at work (100 dollars a week), golf membership and everything else for at least 6 months to pay for this trip.
And.. Lots of 9-5's, tons of them. Only saw 3 9-3SS's; seemed more appropriate there than the 9-5 since it is smaller.
