I've seen issues with corrosion on the circuitry. All it takes is a problem with the hermetic seal.
Things fail. If there is a design defect, they fail quickly. However, even with a well-designed unit, some will fail sooner and some later. Look at it this way - when you get a 4-year guarranty on a toaster, the manufacturer isn't saying it won't fail for four years; he's saying that if it does, they'll fix it. Hopefully, the designed it so they won't get a lot of returns. Things fail, that's why on critical systems that can kill you, like on airplanes, there are redundant systems and backups. And for the Prime Reliable components where you can have only one, they are over-engineered, inspected, and in many cases, retired after a certain amount of use.
A piece of delicate electronics died after 50K miles of use in one of the worst possible environments for electronics. That's pretty good.
