Way back in 1985 when Yamaha came out with the first production 5 valve engine (in FZ 750, sick) I had ever heard of, they touted the primary benefit as boosting torgue. The reason for this was that the three small intake valves allowed them to expose more valve area earlier. I think design may be limited on the top end (compared to a 4 valve design) because port size. Yamaha still uses 5 valves in their top sportbikes, but kawasaki manages to make even stronger motors with 4 valve heads. As far as Audi and VWs 5 valve motors go, I have to assume they were grossly undertuned. Why all the fuss for mediocre power? I know the 1.8Ts respond really well to a simple ECU upgrade, so their tuning must be conservative.
