I suggest dealing with a possible fouling problem with some B12 or other flush or drive on chemical cleaners. These are very inexpensive and can often be quite effective. If that does not work, then you know that its not a 'soft' deposit issue and your costs to that point are very little. If you start with wrenching, the costs and time can be substantial. Might be the oil and might be be the fuel. Techron can help with intake valve and combustion chamber deposits. Synthetic can help with sticking rings and valves too. The plugs can tell you something about fouling. Low temps from a bad stat can promote fouling. Same fuel does not dictate similar end results in different engines. I had lifter noise, slight develop with Castrol FakeTec in a 95SET, never came back after chemical cleaners and Mobil 1 products. Lifter deposits have little to do with the fuel, these are oil deposits. Intake valve stem sticking could be fuel related. Fouled intake injectors can have spray patterns that mess up the lubrication of intake valves.
