Bluetooth is intended for very short range use (such in a car, or between desks) like IR is short range. 802.11b/a/g, etc.. is medium range stuff (within or between buildings), and upcoming wimax is for long range stuff (within and between towns). Wifi in phones is a future connection method for VOIP that is short-medium range, such as making phones calls with the phone from starbucks, mcdonalds, or a corporate hotspot for instance.
Bluetooth doesn't offer any real benefit to me. If I want to print something, I don't go all crazy and get a bluetooth printer, I just plug in the USB cable. If I want my cellphone to work hands free, a cell phone charger/base for doing handsfree is ideal. The charger/base gets you better reception and more power than most built-into-the-phone antennase too, which is the big reason around here that people have handsfree kits in their vehicle. Wired = easier security, no potential interference, charging, etc...
If betamax works for you, don't dismiss it. If you want bluetooth, get it. Honestly, I think style, color screens, and battery life are more important to people than short range networking needs and exotic features. Low cost and low trouble are most important to the cell carriers who are giving away phones or good deals on phone with contracts.
