The camper would be nice. It is incredible how poorly developed that part of North America is. Lodging, food and gas are all very expensive and hard to find.
The roads are excellent and much better than we expected. Would be absolutely no problem for a SAAB (or a Corvette, for that matter.) Definitely take the Cassiar highway shortcut, as the road is in wonderful shape and is worth it. Stop at Bell II lodge on Cassiar, if practical -- you will not regret it. Cross into Hyder, AK from Stewart, BC and see the glacier -- it's worth the time.
About the only place where the road was really in poor shape was around Anchorage. Lots of construction.
If you don't have at least 5 weeks, don't drive. Fly there and rent a car. You will see so much more. It takes too long to drive from the lower 48 to Alaska. You can't drive too fast, as the roads are narrow and there are animals crossing them all the time. We saw deer, caribou, moufflon, elk, bears, mooses, coyotes, foxes and countless critters.
The drive through Muncho Lake provincial park in BC is absolutely the best scenery I have ever seen.
We could not drive the Top of the World highway in June, as there were wild fires all around the area and the road was closed.
Dalton highway is spectacular. Definitely drive it, if you can spare the time. It is bumpy and all gravel, so slow going. There is almost no traffic on it, though, so good rally driving is possible. Lots of fun in an overloaded Volvo station wagon with RWD!!!
Make sure your A/C works well in you go in the summer. It was about 90'F 24 hours a day in June. Definitely take good sunglasses. And at least one full size spare tire.
