H-rated vs. V-rated tires on 9-5, is salesman full of? Posted by IrieTom [Email] (#1032) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IrieTom) on Wed, 22 Sep 2004 12:57:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My mom's 9-5 got a flat tire last night, and isn't repairable. The car was bought used with Michelin MXV4plus tires on it. I looked at a front tire and got the size/rating as 215/55r16 93H and called around for price quotes.
The only place that had one in stock was Sears, who quoted $162.57 installed. When I went there, they insisted on inspecting the car (I walked in with the wheel that was flat, the car was outside in the lot.) After climbing inside the car without asking, and then requesting the key so that he could check the mileage, I had to inform him that the ignition was in the floor. The guy checked the tread depth of all three other tires, and then informed me that the remaining rear tire was V-rated.
According to him, the store could not sell me a single H-rated tire if it was going to be put on the same axle as a V-rated tire. I either had to pay $207.00 for a V-rated tire, or buy two H-rated tires. I asked him how having different speed rated tires would affect safety when the tread patterns were identical, and got a "company policy" answer. I walked out.
My question: does their policy have anything to do with safety, or are they just trying to trick people into buying more/more expensive stuff? I am positive that my mom would never come close to the speed necessary to exceed H-rating specs, much less V-. Is the traction of the tires different enough to cause stability issues? Remember, these are identical size, brand, and model tires with identical tread patterns.
