Different auto makers use different products and it also differs from year to year.
Saab has been using "GM style" clear/goldish colored P/S fluid for a long time. Saab designation 4634 P/N 3009800. It also list as Texaco PSF 4634.
For awhile Saab used Texaco PSF 1890 but due to difficulties of supply they came out with a bulletin to go back and use the older 4634.
In around 97 they changed to the synthetic Pentosin CHF 11S.
That's the dry facts.
As a comparison, Volvo use the same steering parts (rack and pump)as Saab in many of their older models and they recommend using regular ATF fluid.
As a strange twist, Volvo doesn't have nearly as many failures of the power steering racks as the Saab do (I'm talking older cars here, 94 and older 900 versus Volvo 200/700) so you wonder about the magic of the GM fluid.
The Saab fluid in those cars got black or grey quickly from all the aluminum that wore off the rack whereas the red Volvo ATF fluid stays clear a lot longer.
Mixing the old fluid though with the new one (from around 97 and up) I would be careful with, even though I bet that it happens a lot by people who don't know.
We just don't know the implications yet of mixing them. It might work, it might not.
The problem with mixing different fluids is that it might take several years before the damage is noticed and by then it can be difficult to claim what caused the damaged.
