This is really thrilling stuff-commercialization of space. But wait-Rutan's plane barely made it into space. It only went up 70 miles. This is about earth transportation, not space. Gotta get at least orbital to really talk about space. That requires about 50 times the energy packed in those ships. The rocket only achieved mach 3.5-that's why they could just fly back down instead of the ordeal of space re-entry.
But not to lose hope. This is the first real step.
On the technical side, the rocket engine they use is really unique. The fuel is a rubberized solid, but the oxidizer is liquid nitrous oxide-and they can introduce it into the fuel area to burn at a controlled rate or turn it off completely. Such a darn good safety idea. They can actually pull out of a powered spin or roll. Great!
