A friend's daughter got an aftermarket/extended warranty and just looked at it as pre-paid repairs. Not a bad way to look at it.
We got an extended warranty from Ford on my wife's Exploder and it definitely paid for itself over 3 years. Should have gotten the longer one, as the tranny died 1000 miles after the warranty expired. (Murphy's Law in action). A friend with a Mazda MPV got two trannys on his extended warranty.
On my '96 9000, I have a warranty that came from the indy Saab shop where I bought the car. It is zero-deductible through Guardian Warranty Corporation. I got the car a year ago at 90,600 miles and the warranty goes for 2 years or to 124,500 miles. I don't really know the cost as it was wrapped into the price of the car and I wanted it anyway.
So far it bought me a new A/C/ unit, although I paid about $150 extra to get a new Saab unit from eEuroparts instead of the aftermarket reman unit the company allowed. I'm mostly OK with that. It is going to buy me a heater core next, as mine has started to leak. I have a random misfire that may be the DI going, so it will buy that, too.
These days I think these warranties are a good deal if either from the manufacturer (probably the best) or from a reputable company. With indies getting $65 to $80 and hour and dealers asking as high as $90 or $100, costs add up fast. And some parts are not cheap. Peace of mind is a good thing, and we all know that expensive car repairs always happen when you really can't afford them.
