I am finally done with my Philly to JC commute (90 miles each way) and I am so glad its done. If I only had to do it 3 days a week I would survive, 4 is pushing it. I had a Valentine 1 and it was very valuable to the NJTurnpike. I also take the GSP a bit and its less useful. Cops seem to hang out in the popular spots. I don't often use my radar within 50 miles on NYC since it falses a lot and I am not really going that fast (or much faster) than anyone else.
As for car - I have been racking up the milese on a VW Passat. it was cheap, gets good gas mileage, enough pep (1.8T with 5 speed), and low mainteance (relative to the Viggen). I have been happy with it for now. If I could do it again I might have gotten the 9-3 SS Linear due to crashworthyness. Driving that much just puts you into harms way just that much more.
If you only have to work 3/4 days a week and can telecommute some you don't need AWD - just stay home if it is going to snow. Thats what I plan to do. AWD costs more and will not give you great gas mileage for the most part. If my company paid the bill I would drive a loaded 9-5 aero and love every minute of it. If I wanted AWD I guess I would get an audi A6 or A4 with the V6. Subaru Legacy is nice as well.
FWIW - I only bought the Passat because I kept my personal budget to $22K or less for a car that will gain 30-40K miles a year. Depreciation is relative so the cheaper the car the better. Now that my commute is less I will get something nicer next time around.
If you get a radar detector get a Valentine 1.
