I understand/appreciate your frustration with players' interference with referees' calls, but I am unable to support this proposal:
1. First and foremeost, a penalty should address a player's actions on the field during the game. If a team could be penalized for a player's interference with the officials, then there should also be potential penalties for players'/coaches' reactions to penalties. Such a scenario could obviously spiral (a slippery slope) and lead to eventual 5-yard penalties for "failure to professionally acknowledge a competitive objection to the halo infraction."
2. The beauty of baseball is the "skillful subjectivity" required in its rules. An umpire possesses ultimate authority over strikes, outs, and ejections. Sport is the last true human drama that we can manipulate for entertainment and material gain (tongue firmly implanted in cheek), and I would hate to see every call reside in either scientific analysis or legal posturing.
Yes, the technical governance of a sport's rules can be effectively achieved through modern technology, but I do not believe that a stricter "layering" of sportmanship-inspired penalties will provide a more equitable playing field. A player should be expected to demonstrate only the level of portsmanship that can be enforced by his team members or opponents. A referee's duty is to regulate the competitive actions of a sport's participants, not to critique and restrict the ancillary actions of those individuals.
