I've had both children and a wife (now ex, but not for this reason) who indulged in just whipping off the seat belt, and let it land where it may. This kind of habit is usually not an isolated "symptom"; it usually seems to be practiced by people who lack a bit of "fine touch" for objects around them - examples: can't screw the ketchup lid back on, slam doors, drive cars until they break and then wonder why . . . I'm sure you understand what I mean. As for retraining them, forget it. If they don't care on their own accord, your interest in the subject is probably not going to motivate them to take it to heart.
