Standing seam metal roofs are great alternatives to asphalt shingle and slate roofs. Metal roofs typically last 25-50 years. This is dependent upon local weather, quality of materials, and quality of the installation.

The added expense (which is probably significant) is easily made up for in terms of life expectancy. So if you plan on owning the property forever and have the cash to do it now, it would certainly be something to consider.

Architecturally, they are becoming much more popular. I am not sure how 'good' it would look on a ranch - I think they look great on old farm houses and new farm-style houses. Try to find another ranch with a metal roof and see if you like it. Architectural shingles should last 25 years and might be offer a better appearance.

Istallation in my mind should be done by a professional. The primary reason for letting a pro do it for me would be safety. Metal roofs are very slick. Most roofing is not rocket science, but installing a metal roof is much more technically difficult than asphalt shingles. Metal roofs need to be installed on brackets that allow thermal expansion. Then the seams need to be rolled. Sealant needs to be applied where it is required. Finally, metal trim peices need to be properly cut and installed to close-up the ridge, eave, and rake edges. I imagine anyone could get the main field of the roof installed, but trimming and flashing it out with sheetmetal is requires plenty of craftmanship.

I would wager to say that a high-quality shingle roof properly installed would give you the best bang for the buck and limit the possibility of having a house that just doesn't look right.

Good luck,

Chris
