typical Midwest winter requires supplemental heat.
Instead of a gas furnace, use hydronic heat
System install cost would be significantly more, but radiant rocks.
The big question (which I don't have the answer) would be whether to continue to use the heat pump when outside temp falls below 40F, or go exclusively with gas boiler? If you continued to use heat pump, to get what you can from it, the discharge temp would be too low, requiring the installation of a hot water coil in the ductwork. By the time you raise temp to something tolerable, you've probably met most of your home's heating needs, making the radiant devices unnecessary. I would consider disabling the heat pump when below 40F, running gas boiler exclusively, with radiant devices. Perhaps the heat pump could be made to run at slowest fan speed for air filtration purposes, if required.
