The Palm only takes Secure Digital (SD) or Multi-Media (MMC) cards. They do not take Compact Flash - a totally different form factor.
The difference between SD and MMC is that SD have a little switch that allows you to write protect them. Not a big deal, in my book. the major difference is that MMC cards are very poorly supported, and are hard to find and expensive. So the SD is the way to go.
CF cards tend to be a little cheaper, but that's because they are more common. However, in the past few months, I've noticed the price difference between SD and CF getting smaller.
I would stick with more, smaller cards. 1gb is attractive, but it's still a 'premium' card right now - you'll pay top dollar. Recently I've been seeing 256mb cards for as little as $19.95 (bought one last week on sale at Staples). That's about 4 hours of music - you won't get much more from your battery. And if the card dies (and cards do die), you aren't out as much of an investment.
