Same thing happened to me. Running Window 2k. Can't remember exactly what happened the first time, except I closed Firefox and then wanted to reopen it. Received a response asking if I wanted to open the default version or a new default version. I kept asking for the default version and would get an error stating it was already running. I checked the Task Manager and it wasn't running. After the third time, I selected a new default and it went back to the original Firefox without my modifications. Fortunately I have GoBack, which is a program that resets the harddrive to an earlier state. Asked for a state an hour earlier and retrieved my Firefox mods. The next time it happened was when I tried to access the Mozilla website. The program locked up so I closed it. Then tried to restart, but it wouldn't. This time I checked Task Manager at the Processes tab and sure enough Firefox was still there--hanging. So I selected the end processes button, closed the program and restarted without any problems. I suggest next time this happens check for the program hanging in the processes tab.
