Last night I drove home and when I got out of the car, I heard the distinct sound of a tire leak. I just can't take that, so I'm going to send him to salvage yard.
No, no, just kidding. Anyway, it did have a tire leak, fortunately the tire still had over 30lbs of air, so the rim is fine. I went to jack it up tonight and I heard a very disturbing crunching noise... Said crunching noise was the jack getting very up close and personal with the frame rail and doing its best to go inside. I put the car back down on the ground and checked out the scene and it was nasty, though the jack didn't punch through into the car, the entire point where the jack is supposed to go is completely rusted. There's rust all around there.
I've already gone through a pretty traumatic process with the rust in the trunk, but that was okay because it's not quite as important structurally as the frame rail. I am not sure where the rust has gotten to or how far it's gone into the car, but I'm not going to risk my wife or my own personal safety hoping that a body shop was able to cure the cancer. It's one thing in a trunk floor where they can just cut out the bad and weld in the new, but there's no telling how far the rust has gone.
I'm really bummed about this, despite the tone of this e-mail. I have NEVER put so much money or effort into a car before. I've replaced every thing in it, but I always said that I would drive it until I couldn't. I've reached that point.
I think my classic 900 days are over too. I'm not looking at re-creating another SPiGy. I think I'll part out the car on eBay and Saabnet and see get something else.
Earlier this summer, I bought a sports car, so I can't really spend too much on a car, so I'm looking at leasing a Jetta GLI for $200/month or a 9-2X Linear for about the same..... I'll let you know what I chose.
Thanks one and all for your support over the last many years with this SPG. It's truly a one of a kind vehicle and IMHO is still the best looking SPG I know of other than Jeff P.'s...
Look for all sorts of fun parts on Saabnet, like custom made TEO5 w/ big 16G wheel and texas monster thrust bearing, GFB BOV, upgraded fuel injectors, Aquamist water injection system, painted SPG panels, clear corner lights, aftermarket rims, inxtrax springs, bilstein shocks, Husco armrest, custom black carpet, short shifter, probably one of the few adjustable interval wiper relays in the US.... Ugh... this is killing me..............
Sorry for the long ramble...........
