Depending on what you are looking for, there are several choices.
Google is the leader, most hands down. But that is if you want a simple, no-nonsense version of a search engine. It loads quick because there is only the "Google" graphic, and the rest is text (a lot like Saabnet). You don't have to fight pop-up ads whether external or internal. The ads (how most/any search gets paid) are neatly displayed, one or two at the top and on the right-side, not interferring with what one is looking for. The results are based on "relevance" called PageRank, which basically tracks the "hits" for any search. (ie. If you type in specific company, and most are going to specificcompany.com, then that ranks first) It is also customizable (weeds out "bad" sites - ie. white house will give you whitehouse.gov instead of whitehouse.com, which is inappropriate if you are not looking for adult entertainment) and the google toolbar works great!
As for the flip-side, if you are looking for more of a portal, which a lot of other search engines have become, than Google's probably not for you. Try MSN, Yahoo, or Excite - all big, early, major players. Excite does give one a warning off the bat if you type something that yields "adult" results. One then has the option to say yes or no to display them. The portals give you news and notes about "what's going on, etc." The nice thing is that they still have the search bar right at or near the top, so they haven't totally put it on the back burner. The funny part is that several sites search engine "function" is powered by Google, or someone else.
Whichever you choose, most have security functions that are customizable. Good luck either way! It's more of a form or function question.
