Texas is unique among all the States in that it shares Mexican and Deep South roots.
If you asked Texans whether Texas is part of the southwest, the answer would vary depending on where in Texas they lived, and perhaps where their ancestors came from. If you asked someone from Beaumont, he'd say no. El Paso, almost certainly yes. San Antonio or anywhere in the valley, yes, far more often than not. (Strong Mexican roots and stringly inetgrated Tejano-Texican culture.)
If you asked someone from Dallas, he wouldn't know, because he recently moved there from somewhere else -- kind of like San Diego and therabouts.
Most people in Austin think that they are in New York or Boston ... and they probably should be.
