For model year 1999 Saab launched the 9-5 to replace the 9000. At the same time, there were significant changes/upgrades to the 900 made. Since every (nearly every) Saab model has been numbered and began with 9 and the last two where 900 & 9000; the next "logical" step was to name the new car 90000.
This would not have been pratical. If you look closely at the 9-5 on the back of the car or in brochures, it is actually a 9 with a superscript 5. This in is 9 to the fifth power or - 90,000. The 900 was changed at the same time in the same manner, 9 to the third power.
Pretty esoteric huh?
