She probably thought that putting snow tires up front will allow her to stop better because the front wheels do most of the braking. This sounds good but it leaves out part of the equation. The rear tires will have very little grip and will slide with the least provacation. A difficult situation to handle.
If the snows are on the back the car will get moving easier, will be less likely to swap ends, but will tend to plow easily.
The answer is to get 4 snows. She was probably willing to spend more money for a safe car. A couple of hunded bucks for safe tires should be easy to justify.
