If so, is the ethernet connection currently used by the DSL/cable modem ?
Do you need the laptop to access the internet via the DSL/cable modem ?
If your sony already has a wireless card, you need to find out whether it is a 801.11b or 801.11g or something else.
If you have a wireless DSL modem with integrated router from your DSL provider then you don't need anything. Otherwise, you need a wireless router that connects to your modem and your Dell. The wireless router also acts as the access point to your Sony (which I presume has a wireless card). If you don't have a wireless card in the laptop, get the card and wireless router from the same manufacturer and that would make life a bit easier if you call the not always useful help line. I had problem with Linksys hardware, the wireless router worked fine but the adapter cards kept dropping the connection (both USB and PCI cards), I don't know why. I also had problem with adapter cards from D-link but I ended up using a couple of D-link access points functioning in client mode (for those who understand what I'm talking about) and no more dropped connections unless I was fooling with it 8-).
If your Dell is centrally located in your condo, you most likely can access the Dell anywhere in your living space unless you've got metal insulation between walls or floors.
Let us know what you end up with.
