website development business. Have you looked at how you can take that up a level or three? Maybe target companies that want to do things they can't do with shrink-wrapped software, or that require specialized programming knowledge, use of large databases, support CRM programs, etc.?
I've been mostly self-employed (consulting and marcomm in the printing industry) for about 14 years and while the grass often seems greener somewhere else, I'd say that unless you are burnt out with what you do now, don't dump it too quickly. I can see where a package store could be pretty lucrative, but unless you can significantly differentiate the business from others you are selling a commodity, which makes it harder to develop a strong, loyal customer base. (And speaking from experience, I can tell ya retail can be a drag. It's long hours and it can get boring fast.) Plus you get the joys of managing low paid, low skilled employees.
I find it is best to have multiple revenue streams, so you don't count on just one type of work or project (or client). I'm expanding what I do so I'm more valuable to my customers (mostly Fortune 100 and 500 companies) while adding other related things to a different market. Maybe you can do the same type of thing.
Good luck! As long as you have the temperament for it, being self-employed is the best way to go through life. Just be sure it's something you don't mind doing A LOT of because you'll be "at work" more than you might like.
