If you have a car with an EDU (like Urby says), say a 9000 or newer car, the EDU displays battery voltage. You can do a lot with that information.
If you have an OG900, there are a bunch out there. I think I picked something up at Target for about $10 - it showed inside and outside temp, and plugged into the cigarette lighter, and also showed battery voltage. I hard-wired it into a switched circuit.
There are the good old charge meters - a meter in series with the battery (actually measuring across a shunt) to determine if the battery is charging or discharging, and how much. A nice thought, but not really that useful.
Basically, you want to measure battery voltage, but not get too wound up over it. When the car is running, all of the electrical needs are being supplied by the alternator, and the battery voltage is actually alternator voltage. The 9000 EDU shows startup voltage, which is a snapshot of the battery voltage during cranking. This gives a rough indication of battery health.
