It's the floorpan. You can make a set of dies for one floorpan, and everything else can be different (engine, tranny, suspension, etc).
The idea is you can use the same conveyors, dollies, and hangars in the plant for multiple models. This way the same weld, paint, and assembly plants can run multiple models of the same "platform" on the same line. Examples from plants I consult in include Corolla/Pontiac Vibe and Corolla/Matrix.
Trust me, there are many other challenges to running multiple models on one line including stocking multiple parts and all the conveyance.
