I would think most timeshares are scams. You pay $10 to $20K upfront for a an obligation to pay $300 - $500 a year for 99 years for a weeks stay somewhere in the world. If you invest your money instead of sinking it into a timeshare, you could peel off the interest and add it to the yearly "maintenance" fee. This should give you enough to pay for your stay anywhere in the world, not just the choices they give you. Don't forget that if you want out of a timeshare you must sell it. You are always on the hook for the yearly maintenace fee, regardless of whether or not you use it. A timeshare is not an investment, it is a liability.

They only way I could see it making any sense, is if you get a "second hand" timeshare at a really cheap price - and you know that you will use it every year. Even then - you will be on the hook for the greater part of 100 years -> passing this liability on to your children.

The salespeople have a very convincing high pressure sales pitch. They show you luxury resorts at cheap prices. They show you smiling families and a legacy for your children.

But how luxurious will those resorts be in 30 years? 60 years? What kind of resale will you have on it if you need to get out? How much is the yearly maintenance fee? How much could it get increased? How difficult is it to trade (don't believe them unless the share you are buying is truly in a high demand area at the right time of year).

Take your money and invest it in something that will increase in value. Use the interest to help fund your yearly vacation and you will feel much better about it. You will have avoided a costly scam.

Eric
