I have the Solo2 and love it. It's much better than the previous one I had which was the Valentine 1.
I got the hardwire kit from Escort for my 9-5 to save on batteries and get a better range out of the unit. Was only a $10 item and easy to wire up. Went right into the fuse box, grounded it behind it and plugged it into the slot that my DRL fuse was. Ran the wire up behind the pillar, accross the headliner front and it drops right behind the rearview mirror. Took all of about 10 minutes and well worth it. Better than having that coiled cord drop in front of your dash.
Even on batteries, it picks up X, K, and Ka bands from a great distance....much better than the V1. I have no personal experience with the 8500, but the people at Passport said it was a very minimal difference between the two, and said that hardwired, the S2 might even have a bit more range.
Personally, I'd say go with the S2...really easy to move from one vehicle to another and has a great display on it...along with other features.
