Hey Simon,
I live not-too-far from that area so here are my thoughts...
It's in an area called "Hotel Circle" which is a collection of a bunch of hotels. In some repects it's good because the hotels are affordable and you are literally right next to 3 major highways: the 5, the 8, and 163, which will shoot you directly to the Beaches, Zoo, downtown, wherever you want... if you drive.
The drawback is that you really can't get anywhere from your hotel by walking. You might be able to walk over to the Mission Valley shopping center, but in terms of being in an area with good views and walking, you're out of luck.
Of course, being SoCal, you can't really do any walking regardless, but if you want a more "vacationy" hotel (vistas, beaches, nearby shops, pools, green grounds all at hand), you might want to look elsewhere. But if you just need a base-camp for your explorations of San Diego, it's a good bet.
