Engineering Job Update - I'm staying put. Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] (#22) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Randy Thatcher) on Thu, 20 Jan 2005 15:52:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you wanna know the background, I posted a week or so ago on my dillema. Today I told the potential new boss I'm staying put. He was not offended and he understands. I guess I'll tell my current boss today, too!
It comes down to a few things. I work for a large corporation, but my current job offers so much flexibility it would damn near kill me to put defined structure into my day. Showing up at a given time, having timecards in by 10AM on monday (or else facing red flags on the annual review), and not being able to work from home when not at a customer site or on the road were all pretty major contributors. The new gig was potentially more busywork vs. my 50% engineering delivery and 50% business development/commercial thing today. Also signing up for a good bit more hassle for a little more pay didn't make sense. I should get my promotion in my current gig next month, too. That will give me a few more bucks.
I appreciate the advice about flex time and a good boss being gold, don't leave if you're not happy, don't leave unless there is a CLEAR reason for doing so, and don't leave if you still have more to learn and there isn't a really good reason to.
As for not taking a chance and regretting it later... I did that a few years back when I could have moved to Denver to work for my uncle, who happens to be the president of his company. He would have put me on track to be the next prez. The job didn't excite me at the time, but now I look back and wonder. Should I have tried it? I think that would have been my ticket to financial fredom, but possibly unhappiness in my career. I'll never know.
Here's to more time in the automotive manufacuring consulting business. It's in my blood now, and I'm happy as ever doing it!
Cheers!
Randy
