I've always made it a point of running the tank dry at the end of the season. I've never used fuel stabilizer, but the fuel never sits very long. Where I live, it usually snows at least every few weeks. I don't know if it helps any, but I always pick up my snowblower gas as late in the season as possible - I don't use summer gas. Not only is it 'newer', I believe that they modify the formulation in winter.
I have an "old gas" story. My mother-in-law had an old Craftsman mower. The backyard was so small that you could basically start up the mower, move it two feet, shut down, and you were done.
One summer she called me and told me that the mower wouldn't start. I showed up with tools. I asked her how old the gas was. "Gas?" she said. "I've never put in gas." Basically, since her husband died, she'd be running on one tank of gas, and that was about 5-6 years. There was still 'gas' left in the tank. I siphoned it out with a turkey baster, and hosed the tank and carb down with Gumout. Added fresh gas, and it started right up.
