I think before getting anywhere with this thread you need to identify what exactly you're looking for. For me, a DVD recorder doesn't make any sense since I generally don't have any reason to keep recorded content for very long - I use a Dish Network DVR (Tivo, ReplayTV, whatever) since 80 hours of recording is a pretty good archive. Stuff I missed I can see, and it's quick and easy to access.

If you're looking for long-term storage, like family movies or made-for-TV movies you'd like to hang onto, then a DVD recorder is probably more up your alley. This is where my parents are, so I bought them a Lite-On LVW-5005 which has the best featureset of any DVD recorder at any price. The brand is questionable (IMHO), but their computer DVD recorders consistently score well (I have one... works flawlessly) so I figured their components couldn't be that bad. :) The 5005 has everything all the other recorders have (progressive scan, optical output, component output, etc.) but supports both DVD+ and DVD- standards, has a firewire port right up front, and has its own separate RF tuner. They've only had it since Christmas, but it's performance flawlessly on several video transfers and does everything it's supposed to do. In my mind, its flexibility with media makes it the standout - I have personally had poor luck with other brands (namely Philips and Panasonic) and media compatibility. The Lite-On seems to work with everything...

FWIW, I bought mine at Provantage.com, and it ended up being cheaper than the cheapest name-brand DVD recorder available at normal electronics places.

Future DVD standards will of course store more, but standard current DVDs are equivalent in density to VHS tapes, and perfectly acceptable IHMO. A normal $0.50 DVD+R will store two hours of high quality video... That's a pretty good value. Considering current dual-layer discs are running $10ea and only store double what current single-layer discs do, I don't think that HD or Blu-Ray DVDs will be an affordable option any time in the near future. I could be wrong, but a $200 Lite-On seems like a reasonable 2-3 year investment for saving things that you don't wanna lose. Normal DVDs are going anywhere soon...
