I've skied at nearly every resort in the Tahoe area numerous times.
First of all, where are you coming from or staying? That'll make a big difference on what resorts are closest. The lake is 72 miles around, so you don't just drive to the south shore from the north on a whim.
Anyway, the recommendation to carry chains (if you have only 2WD) is a good one. State and Interstate Highways are patrolled, while surface streets are less-so.
If you're looking for groomed runs, any of the big names are a good bet. Northstar is famous for corduroy. Others would be Heavenly, Squaw, Alpine, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Sugar Bowl.
Alpine has $39.00 lift tickets and is an awesome hill. Squaw is, well, Squaw...If you want to do some shipping at lunch, Squaws the spot (I for one like to SKI at my ski resorts, so I don't go there very often, although the skiing is phenominal) My other favorite is Sugar Bowl. It gets the most snow, and is removed from the Lake just enough to get away from the glam (realtive here). Homewood, along the west shore has some of the best views I've ever skied with, and is reasonably priced. (No high speed lifts though...but it's nice, and laid-back.)
Check out the places Websites. shoot me an email or post any more specifics. Happy to help.
Be sure to figure where you're staying and decide on skiing. Why drive for nearly an hour when you could drive less (like 10 minutes, perhaps?
