Banks HATE checks.

They are expensive and a hassle for them to deal with. One of the ways they recoup some of the costs is by whacking you for checks. Plus banks would like you to NOT use them. Checks will gradually all but go away via debit cards, online payment, etc. The new Check 21 law is the current step in making checks go away.
To get them cheap or free, change banks or types of accounts. We have most of our accounts at one bank (Citizens) so we get checks for free. If you want fancy ones there are a lot of options. There is not much special about check printing, except they have to use MICR toner in most instances, but the cost for this is really marginal.
