and although only a small amount of memory (64MB) on-board, I have stepped it up to 64+256MB with an additional SD card. I did the same (and like hers better) with the GF and purchased for her the Rio Cali (she likes yellow) with 128MB and also added 256MB.

Mine gets me 150 songs (currently) at 64K WMA (equivalent to 128K MP3) which is good enough for working out. My plan is to purchase a 1GB card (which are down to about $70 and will add almost 4x more storage) for now to replace the 256MB. This is until I shell out the money for the iPod, which I plan to store all, or most of my music collection (ripped from my CDs) on.

The idea here is that I am afraid of working out with the iPod (or any other hard-drive-based player) where it would be subject to bumps and bruises. The flashed-based player has few/no moving parts, and most are "rubberized" or some other coating for protection against impact. The price is lesser, and the ability to add additional memory is a plus, especially with the price of memory coming down so much. It also has an FM-tuner built-in. Although it is not picking up stations "cross-state/country" it does well enough to pick up reception from TVs in the gym and most local stations.

And after the iPod purchase, I will continue to use the smaller, flashed-based Rio for working out, etc. Whereas I will use the iPod in the car, work, home, etc.

So, those are my pennies... Specific players, Rio has been great, and they have a couple nice new offerings (I believe "Forge" is the name of the new line) which are similar to my GF's Cali. And the price is about $100-150 plus $30-70 for additional memory, and can be had for less.

If you go with the mini, maybe also look at the Rio Carbon (5GB). If this is your path, perhaps look at getting a rubberized case for either. Let us know which route you choose. Good luck!

Sean
